Towing A Horse Trailer

If you are one of the many people in the United Kingdom who travel with horses by the use of towing a horse trailer, you should know that the trailer law legislation has changed since the start of 2013. It is therefore important that you remain up to date with the current legislation and ensure that you are towing your horse or horses around safely.

Towing a Horse Trailer & Trailer law

Given the importance of the horse or horses that they are transporting the vast majority of drivers in this position take great care to be as safe as possible. It is important to bear in mind that ignorance of trailer law is no defence and if you do not comply with the legislation and are found to be towing a horse trailer in breach of it, you may find yourself facing a police prosecution with penalty points.

If you obtained your standard car licence (the B licence) prior to the 19th of January 2013 but after the 1st of January 1997, you can drive:

  • A car and trailer up to a combined weight of 4,250kg with the trailer taking up to 750kg while the vehicle takes up to 3,500kg.
  • A car and trailer with a combined weight of up to 3,500kg where the trailer does not weigh more than the kerb weight of your vehicle.

If you obtained your licence prior to the 1st of January 1997, you can drive a trailer and vehicle up to 8,250kg in total weight. Drivers who have obtained their standard licence since the 19th of January 2013 can drive trailers weighing up to 750kg or a combination of trailer and car where the total weight isn’t more than 3,500kg.

In all of these combinations, the relevant weight for the trailer has to include the weight of the horse so there is a need to weigh your horse and determine the impact that this will have on your ability to drive. If you find that the weight of the horse or horses exceeds the weight stated in the regulation, you will need to take an additional test which will provide you with the qualification required to tow a heavier load.
